UPS Taiwan (NYSE:UPS) today revealed details of additional measures the company is taking to help fight the global spread of the coronavirus.

UPS is helping the New Taipei City Government ship thousands of pieces of Taiwan-made personal protective equipment (PPE) to its sister cities of Cincinnati in the United States, and Starnberg in Germany, as well as to New York City.

By leveraging its fleet of over 570 aircraft and optimizing its smart logistics network, UPS is helping aid agencies, healthcare workers, governments and businesses around the world to receive PPE, medicines and other vital goods at a time when a reliable supply is crucial.

“The recent surge in PPE orders from around the world has come at a time of unprecedented capacity restrictions throughout the global air network. UPS is responding to this challenge on behalf of our customers by leveraging the strength and flexibility of our smart logistics network to ensure that PPE, medicines and other critical orders are delivered as quickly as possible,” said Sam Hung, Managing Director of UPS Taiwan.

“UPS has been designated by various governments around the world as a ‘critical infrastructure business’ or an ‘essential service’, and we have both the privilege and responsibility to continue safely working during this challenging period. People are counting on UPS more than ever and we are grateful for the hard work and dedication of all our employees in facilitating the flow of vital supplies.”

Director General of the Secretariat of New Taipei City Government, Yao Chingyu added, “UPS is more than just a business partner for us and we are looking forward to continuing to achieve great things together.”

UPS has moved to reduce the risk of spreading the infection by regularly advising staff on how to minimize exposure to the virus including through the practice of social distancing, providing the necessary supplies of PPE and implementing a contactless delivery experience by temporarily suspending requirements for customers to sign for packages.

In Taiwan, UPS is also able to reinforce contactless delivery by leveraging its network of alternative delivery options such as Palmbox lockers. Upon receiving a notification from UPS, Taiwanese consumers receiving packages from international retailers can choose to collect from Palmbox e-lockers conveniently located in 1,288 locations across Taiwan such as supermarkets and apartment complexes.

“UPS has almost 500,000 employees in 2,800 facilities around the world, and in our capacity as an essential service we continue to work with our people, our customers and the regulatory authorities to ensure we can carry on safely fulfilling our service commitments,” added Hung.

“We share the concern of the global community and will continue to do everything we can to help with the containment and eradication of the virus.”
